Description

True blue flowers are like gold dust in the garden - especially ones that bloom in partial shade, and for as long a period as ‘Blue Heron’! That’s why these Corydalis are such treasures.

These hardy perennials give you rich, sapphire-blue blooms in the shadier spots of your garden, and they just keep going for months.

Starting in April, it kicks into flower with elegant, scented, trumpet-shaped blooms in blue with upright red stems. They just keep on coming right through to early autumn. You might expect plants with this much flair to be fussy, but they're anything but. They are hardy, compact and low maintenance, thriving year after year with very little effort.

They grow brilliantly in part shade, ideal for the front of borders, under deciduous trees, or in containers tucked near the house. The finely divided, soft green-blue foliage is evergreen too, keeping the garden looking fresh when many perennials disappear completely.

The colour is genuinely something to see. Not many plants manage a true blue, but ‘Blue Heron’ absolutely does, and against that foliage, it really sings. It’s also a great one for pollinators, with bees often seen visiting those tubular blooms on warmer days.

Top Tips

Corydalis may go dormant in very dry summers, so keep it well watered.

Care Information

Best grown in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in a semi-shaded position, avoiding exposed locations. Will grow well in a sunny border if kept regularly watered to stop it becoming dormant in the summer.
As the plant dies back the leaves will yellow and the stems wither - at this point you can cut them down to ground level, and you may get a second flush.
When new growth emerges in spring, add a slow-release fertiliser to the soil to encourage longer blooming, and continue to feed and wather throught the growing season.
Look out for slugs and snails eating young leaves.
Propagate by division in autumn.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.
